SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. It’s when you use a set of keywords on your website to rank higher in search engine results pages (SERPs). Higher rankings increase visibility, traffic, and potentially higher revenue. SEO involves different techniques and practices designed to make your website more attractive to search engines like Google, Bing, Yahoo, and YouTube. (Yes, even videos!)

It might sound wild if this is your first time hearing about it, but… YouTube is a giant “searching” device. Using SEO is paramount to helping people find your content.

Key Components of SEO

  1. On-page SEO: Optimizing individual web pages to rank higher and earn more relevant traffic. This includes content, HTML code, and images. (Yes, you should include SEO keywords in the title and description of your images!)
  2. Off-page SEO: Activities outside the boundaries of your website that impact your rankings, such as backlinks, social media marketing, and influencer outreach.
  3. Technical SEO: Ensuring your website meets search engines’ technical requirements, including site speed, mobile friendliness, and secure connections (HTTPS).

Isn’t this too much? Nope. Keep reading because you need to know every single bit of it if you want to help people find you (so you get some moolah!)

Why Do You Need SEO?

1. Increased Visibility

The primary goal of SEO is to increase your website’s visibility. When your site ranks higher in search engine results, it is more likely to be seen by potential visitors. This increased visibility can lead to more traffic and greater opportunities for conversion.

In plain words, you’re helping people find you online so you can start a conversation with them. The trick of SEO is to make it super easy for people to find you and have a happy experience with you.

2. Higher Traffic

Higher visibility directly translates to increased web traffic. Organic search is one of the most significant sources of website traffic. By optimizing your site for search engines, you can attract more visitors without spending money on ads.

Let’s be honest: people are tired of ads. You’re so bombarded by them daily that you will most likely ignore them entirely! However, when you need to know something or want to solve an issue, you tend to search for a solution online. Most people search for information on Google or videos on YouTube about how to solve a problem!

Most people believe that websites that appear on the first page of search results are generally perceived as more credible and trustworthy. SEO helps build your site’s authority and reputation, which can lead to higher trust from your audience. However, there’s also “time” mixed in this cocktail. Most people are busy and want to solve issues or find something super quickly. The number of people checking more than one page on Google isn’t that high. That’s why SEO can help you be in the right place for the right eyes. And yes, it feels more trustworthy when you’re closer to the first page or on the first page of results.

Step 1: Keyword Research

Keyword research is the foundation of SEO. It involves identifying the words and phrases potential customers use when searching for products or services related to your business.

Tools for Keyword Research:

  • Google Keyword Planner: A free tool that helps you find relevant keywords and provides search volume data. Okay, it works for “ads,” but you don’t need to purchase ads! You need to gather data for your research first.
  • Ubersuggest: Offers keyword suggestions, search volume, and competition analysis.
  • Ahrefs: A comprehensive SEO tool that provides detailed keyword analysis.
  • Answer the Public: It will help you search and analyze different word combinations in various search engines like Google, Bing, YouTube, TikTok, and Amazon.

How to Perform Keyword Research:

  1. Brainstorm keywords: List all the possible keywords related to your business. Or, go to Google and start with a word or two and see what Google suggests. That’s what other people have searched using those words.
  2. Use keyword tools: Input these keywords into tools like Google Keyword Planner or Ubersuggest to find related keywords and search volumes.
  3. Analyze competition: Look at the keywords your competitors are targeting and identify opportunities to rank for similar or related terms.
  4. Select target keywords: Choose a mix of short-tail and long-tail keywords that are relevant to your content and have a good balance of search volume and competition. (Short-tail keywords have one or two words; long-tail keywords have three or more words).

Step 2: On-Page SEO

On-page SEO involves optimizing individual pages of your website to improve their search engine rankings. This includes optimizing content, HTML tags, and images.

Key On-Page SEO Elements:

  • Title tags: Your web page’s title should include your target keywords.
  • Meta descriptions: These descriptions appear in search results. It should be compelling and include keywords.
  • Headers (H1, H2, H3): Use headers to structure your content. The H1 tag should contain your primary keyword, while the H2 and H3 tags can include secondary keywords.
  • URL structure: Keep URLs short and descriptive and include keywords.
  • Content optimization: Create high-quality, relevant content that provides value to your audience. Include keywords naturally within the content. Don’t be a robot and start writing a thousand keywords in the text. Choose one (or two sets of keywords) and write natural text. This is for humans, not for search engines only!
  • Image optimization: Use descriptive file names and alt text for images and compress them to improve load times.

Step 3: Off-Page SEO

Off-page SEO focuses on activities outside your website that can improve your search engine rankings. This primarily involves building backlinks from reputable sites.

Strategies for Off-Page SEO:

  • Guest blogging: Write articles for other websites in your industry to earn backlinks and reach new audiences. Another alternative is writing articles with links to your posts on LinkedIn. Yes, you can be cheeky!
  • Social media marketing: Promote your content on social media platforms to increase visibility and attract backlinks. (These are simple posts that point to your blog or page).
  • Influencer outreach: Collaborate with influencers to share your content and build credibility if you know some.
  • Content marketing: Create valuable and shareable content that naturally attracts backlinks. This means spending time creating valuable posts with information that your audience can use.

Step 4: Technical SEO

Technical SEO ensures that your website meets the technical requirements of search engines and provides a smooth user experience. This is by far the most challenging if you’re not technical. It’s not impossible, though (just a bit annoying).

Technical SEO Checklist:

  • Site speed: Optimize your site’s load time by compressing images, using a content delivery network (CDN), and minimizing JavaScript and CSS files. You’ll notice that my site gets a bit “slower” by the end of the month. That’s because I’ve spent all the CDN goodie-goodies by then. Depending on your server provider, you can access different options (and prices). (Just letting you know that maintaining a platform like mine isn’t as simple as it looks).
  • Mobile-friendliness: Ensure your site is responsive and provides a good user experience on mobile devices. If you’re not a techie type, invest in a good template for your blog. Most people check things on their phones these days. Make sure your webpage looks good!
  • Secure connections (HTTPS): Use SSL certificates to secure your site and protect user data. This is a must. Your server provider can help you with this. I’ve been using SiteGround [affiliate link] for years, and they have fantastic customer support that can help you sort things out.
  • XML Sitemaps: Create and submit an XML sitemap to help search engines crawl and index your site. (Again, choose your templates correctly and have a lovely server provider).
  • Robots.txt: Use the robots.txt file to control which pages search engines should and shouldn’t crawl.

Step 5: Monitoring and Analytics

Monitoring your SEO efforts and analyzing the results is crucial for ongoing optimization. Use analytics tools to track your progress and identify areas for improvement. Sometimes, you discover that you need to change some stuff, but it’s worth it. By the way, the free version of Ahrefs gives you a lot of information.

Tools for Monitoring SEO:

  • Google Analytics: Track your website traffic, user behavior, and conversion rates. This is a must-have. No buts, no excuses.
  • Google Search Console: Monitor your site’s presence in Google search results and identify any issues that need fixing.
  • Ahrefs: Provides detailed insights into your backlink profile, keyword rankings, and overall SEO health. (The paid version is painful, but if you ever grow a lot, it’s worth investing in this).

Metrics to Monitor:

  • Organic traffic: The number of visitors visiting your site through search engines. This is my favorite. Yeah, true; you can have ad campaigns, but nothing compares to reaching out to people in an organic way!
  • Keyword rankings: The positions of your target keywords in search engine results.
  • Backlinks: The number and quality of external links pointing to your site.
  • Bounce rate: The percentage of visitors who leave your site after viewing only one page. This isn’t cool, but it gives you the idea that you must change things!
  • Conversion rate: The percentage of visitors who complete a desired action, such as purchasing or filling out a contact form.
