Future-Proof Your Career: Mastering AI and Remote Work Trends

Mastering AI and remote work are two realities reshaping the labor landscape, not just a scene from a sci-fi novel. Understanding their impact is crucial for anyone navigating the job market. For those facing job loss in this shifting landscape, we’ll also explore a killer prompt tip from the book “You Lost Your Job. Now What? Surviving the AI Shift” that will help you create LinkedIn connections to land a job. Are you ready?
Our Present
The Great Labor Squeeze
Remember the days when “labor shortage” was just a fancy term in economics textbooks? Well, those days are gone. Today, our labor market is tighter than a pair of jeans after Thanksgiving dinner. The working-age population is growing very slowly, and it’s not just because of the pandemic. This trend started way before, with roots going back to a time when smartphones were a sci-fi fantasy. The female workforce, once a booming segment, has hit the pause button, adding to our woes.
Remote Work: The New Office Romance
Then there’s the remote work saga. Thanks to the pandemic, we’ve all had a taste of working in our pajamas. And guess what? A lot of us liked it. No more traffic jams, no more awkward elevator small talk. But it’s not just sunshine and rainbows. While some of us revel in this newfound freedom, others miss the office gossip and birthday cakes. (I love my pajamas!!!) And managers? They’re like worried parents, unsure if their remote-working kids are actually doing their homework. The debate rages on, but one thing’s for sure – remote work is here to stay!
AI: The Office Superhero or Villain?
Enter AI, the most hyped co-worker of the century. For office jobs, AI is like that smart intern who can do everything twice as fast. Tools like ChatGPT are turning into productivity superheroes, but there’s a twist – they might be too good. As AI becomes the office star, the demand for human workers might take a hit. (But didn’t you say there’s a labor force shortage!?)
Well, AI is more of a sidekick. It can’t cook a steak or build a skyscraper yet, but it’s getting there, slowly but surely.
Mastering AI to Future-Proof Your Career
We’re all at a crossroads: on one path, picture yourself turning into a modern-day hermit, escaping to the mountains, hands deep in the soil, growing carrots, and chatting with the birds, or we walk the other path, accepting that AI is here to stay.
Choosing the AI route means we’ve got to buddy up with this technology and sharpen our skills. This isn’t just about staying afloat in the job market; it’s about doing the backstroke in a sea of change. We need to become a jack-of-all-trades, constantly learning, adapting, and upgrading ourselves.
The Cost of Smart Machines
Speaking of AI, let’s talk money. A study from MIT threw a curveball – AI, the futuristic marvel, is still too pricey for many jobs. It turns out that human workers are the budget-friendly option, especially for tasks needing a bit of the old visual finesse. So, for now, your job might be safer than you think.
The Dawn of AI Companies
Imagine a company with no employees. Sounds like a sci-fi movie, right? Well, the future is knocking. Startups are dreaming big, creating AI agents that can run businesses on their own. From handling sales to crunching numbers, these digital employees are gearing up to take the corporate world by storm. But, as with all great things, there’s a catch. These AI whizzes still struggle with the human touch and are not cheap. So, for now, your human boss is here to stay.
Overcoming Job Loss – Killer ChatGPT Prompt Tip
Building Rapport and Meaningful Connections on LinkedIn
One way of overcoming the loss of your job is getting into action, and you can do so by building connections before you even land an interview. Many of my landing jobs happened because I had the audacity to contact my potential employer before they even called me for an interview. Yeah, I’m bold. But you need to be if you want to be noticed in this world!
If you’re someone shy, welcome to the club. This level of boldness that I’ve achieved came after years of tinkering and going out of my comfort zone. It did not come naturally to me. Yet, here I am telling you to be bold and daring and to try to land that pre-interview chat.
The Old Pre-ChatGPT Days
Before ChatGPT, I would simply go online and sniff everything I could about the person that was hiring. Happily, their LinkedIn profile told me a hell of a lot. A little bit more research on Google, and I might even find a book they wrote! The target? I want to sound friendly and talk to them in a familiar voice, hitting the right points to land a conversation with them.
Doing that has made me be noticed and land jobs because I sounded more familiar than my resume and skills alone. I’m not saying that you’ll land the job just because you reach out, but you will have more extra points if you do. And, in the worst-case scenario, you’ll make a meaningful connection that might land you a job in the long run (or become a client!)
Now, a point of caution: only do that with those jobs that you’re really interested in! Those that call your name, those that are your dream jobs.
Mastering AI Through ChatGPT Prompting
With the help of ChatGPT, you can achieve the ultimate bold moves when contacting your potential employer (or prospect!)
First of all, find your prospect on LinkedIn. Then, download their resume. You can do that by clicking on more and saving it to PDF. Then, open the file, select all the information in there, and copy it. Then try this prompt:
First part of the conversation:
Act as my career coach with over 25 years of experience. I’m going to provide you with a LinkedIn profile of [name of the person]. I need you to:1. Summarize in bullet points with explanations of this person’s career accomplishments and highlight their achievements.
2. Create three separate heathers: achievements, skills and accomplishments. Include the three most relevant ones in each, along with as much detail as possible. Choose the ones that showcase the person’s expertise in their field.
3. Analyze my resume and their profile and highlight what we have in common.
This is their profile: [Paste of the details you downloaded from LinkedIn]
This is my resume: [Paste your resume]
ChatGPT will give you great insights so that you can craft an email that will catch the attention of your application and give you a common ground to talk to your prospect. However, you need to find that sweet spot between the output of ChatGPT and your humanity and not overdo things. You are getting ideas from AI, but you’ll need to review the final text and decide what to use next.
Second part of the conversation:
I wish to connect with [name of the person] on LinkedIn. Since they might get lots of emails, I need to stand out from the others.
1. Based on his three top achievements and the things that we have in common, give me three practical and actionable ideas on how I can approach and get [name of person] to accept my request on LinkedIn.
2. Please focus on unique or lesser known advice in your answers. Give me as many details as you can and explain with writing at least three example messages for each, step by step. Write these examples in a familiar yet professional tone.
Now, go and try it out! Just remember: Use this wisely and only contact those people with whom you want to connect!
