Rivers of London Review

Rivers of London is an amazing ride. Today I’m going to review this fantastic book. Keep in mind that I love Sherlock Holmes, fantasy and science fiction. So, there’s no surprise here why I might love Rivers of London so much. Rivers of London was titled Midnight Riot in the US.

The hero of the book is Peter Grant, a young countable from the Metropolitan Police. He has to investigate a crime, and the primary witness is a ghost. He works along with his superior Inspector Nightingale, who is a wizard.

Grant has no idea about magic, but after seeing a ghost, he is up to open his heart to the unknown. In fact, he becomes the first English apprentice wizard in over seventy years! His master is Nightingale, who takes him eagerly under his wing. However, the case is so bizarre that Grant must rush to learn everything he can.

There is a killer on the loose, or maybe more than one, killing people all over. The peace among two warring gods related to the River Thames makes it even worse! To make things spicier, victims get his face off. (I didn’t want to imagine that since I found it super spooky.)

Apart from all the crime and magic, there’s also a funky romance: Grant and Beverley Brook. Beverley is one of the daughters of Mama Thames (Goddess of the Thames), a Goddess of one small river in South London.

Thus, in this book, we find an incredible picture of London: magical, spooky and incredibly vibrant. One of the good points of the book are the actual descriptions of the city. It’s a good idea to take the book and go for a walk around London and try to find some ghosts.

I won’t spoil you the end. However, I found that how victims end is quite graphic and frightening: their faces fall off! In a sense, in real life, we can have a similar situation. Yes, I’m talking in metaphors now. When you do something unexpected and adverse that no one expects, or something socially reproachable, your face falls off immediately. So, I take that all the victims and their odd behaviors are but great metaphors on what happens when we misbehave socially.

Overall, this is a highly entertaining book, plagued with magic, ghosts, vampires and eccentric goddesses. I might keep reading the series. Will you join me?
