Comics THORsday: Loki Agent of Asgard #11, all is falling apart

Welcome to another Comics Thorsday, on LOKIsday! In Loki Agent of Asgard #11, we find that the world around Loki is falling apart. There’s nothing that is standing around him, nothing that is telling him that he belongs. It’s like, no one is letting you change. They don’t want you to be different, to evolve. This is the tragedy that Loki is facing on this issue. He is different, he wants to develop further, and yet, all those around him, especially in Asgard, don’t want him to. And the only friend he has is not capable of understanding him at the moment. Your parents might love you, but they have a hard time in coming to terms when you do change. We’ve been there. When we change from children to young adults. Then, from young adults to adults. People around us want us to remain the same. And many friends won’t understand our motives when we do certain stuff. And so, we’ll feel alone and misunderstood. In times of such change, we cling for some support. And sometimes it does feel like our egos are facing death. And that’s exactly what’s going on with poor Loki!

Loki is changing, from young adult to adult. And he is fighting against his evil future self. And as it seems no one in his family wants him to be different. They want the promise of a better future, only if he does not change at all. Only if he remains the same trickster. In our words: if he remains a child.

Of course, Loki complains. Wouldn’t you? Wouldn’t you complain if no one lets you be who you truly are? The Kid Loki is gone, as it happens when we grow up. Maybe our better selves, the ones that didn’t need to worry at all are killed by our younger adults. Aren’t we a little bit irrational during puberty? Can’t we just be different from our kids selves once we’ve grown up? And if we change, will family and friends really accept us?

Sooner or later our family will need to accept the grownups that we’ve become. As happens with Odin, he loves Loki, all his parts. And yet he warns him that the journey he’s on is one to be done alone. Aren’t we just like Loki? Don’t we change alone? Don’t we make our journeys deciding what to do next? Doesn’t that make us the being we are today?

And even after we’ve changed, there will be some people missing our younger selves. So, where are you? Not home? People evolve, and we never remain the same. And when people around us realize they might get disappointed or even angry. Such is the case of Loki’s mother. Old Loki, the promise of no change at all to save Asgard, is gone. Well, he just left a note.

So, Asgardians have exiled Loki to Midgard, and it seems it’s forever. Because he wouldn’t not change. This drama happens many times in close-minded families that, even though loving their children, cannot come to terms with them coming out or not following certain rules. (Think about some people coming out as members of the LGBTQ+ community and their families exiling them from home!) And so Loki ends up in his friend’s home.

And yes, sometimes friends get angry too. Maybe because they cannot understand you at times. But they might come to terms with it later on (hint to the next issue).
So, even if this issue looks like Loki just being exiled because he killed Kid Loki, it has more to it than meets the eye. Comic books talk in visual and literary metaphors many times. So, what is your closure of this issue?
