Fandom Friday: 5 Fandoms I’m Thankful For

fandom friday, fandom, geek anthropology, pop culture, depepi.com

Welcome to a very difficult fandom Friday! This week has been a bit of a challenge because I am supposed to write about five fandoms I’m thankful for [only five?] So, after thinking a lot I decided to bend the topic a bit [like I don’t ever bent it, ha!] and list some honorable mentions. Why? Because I couldn’t leave them out from the list of five fandoms that mean a lot to me. [This is quite confessing in public why you’re a fan of Loki, Hook, Bilbo and Sherlock. Whoever thought this topic: are you aware how difficult is geeking out loud about this!?]

1. [It couldn’t be any other mischief] Loki’s Army.

What other fandom could be on the top of the list? [After writing a book about it… I guess that no other fandom can.] If you don’t know it yet, Loki’s Army is the fandom that made me ask cool questions and start writing. So yes, Loki of Asgard made me do it. Mischief has been managed in 400+ pages of extreme fangirling over the character, the actor who plays it and the fandom who loves them. I made friends thanks to it, enjoyed writing like never before, and explored something that I love deeply: geek anthropology. For that [and more] Loki’s Army is on the top of the fandom pyramid.

2. [It couldn’t be any other adventure] LOTR x Hobbit. Tolkienites & Ringers Unite!

This fandom made me go on adventures. Nope, this is not the fandom that made me go to Japan, but the fandom that made me take a backpack and travel around Australia and New Zealand. Because of it I went to Rivendell and enjoyed a funny LOTR tour with the Kiwis. I happen to be the only female member of the family who has travelled alone around with a backpack. Not only I set up myself for an adventure, but I also happened to know myself better. Very much like Bilbo when he went out from home and decided to go somewhere dangerous with a mysterious folk, the Dwarves. He found his courage! [And he found and evil ring that he finally dropped on the ground. Oh! Bilbo! The true hero. Sorry Frodo, you didn’t let it go, but had Gollum fall to his doom with the ring and your finger.]

3. [It couldn’t be any other Captain] Star Trek TNG. Wisemen come in baldness.

For me, Star Trek means family. It was my mother who made me fall for this fandom, and I am grateful for that. First, because the Captain was bald. [Wait, what!?] It might seem strange but, that Captain Picard is bald is giving us a great lesson: no matter your looks, you can go wherever you like if you have good manners and a strong will. And second, the Captain’s lines. It is what he says, his lines, what he thrilled me the most. Star Trek TNG is awesome because the Captain is not only badass, he is a wise man. And wise men come in any shape, with boldness and in baldness.

4. [It couldn’t be any other logic] Sherlock.

Again: family’s fault. Someone gave me as present a book that contained one of the best detectives of all times: Sherlock. My grandmother used to buy me a book a week, under the condition that I would read it. So, if I read it, she would buy me another one the next week. I could choose whatever I wanted: a book or a comic book. It didn’t matter, as long as I read it. And so, Sherlock ended up between my hands. And since then, I am a fan. So, what has given me Sherlock? A taste for logic and taking a look at things from different perspectives. It has also given me a taste for discovering hidden patterns. Oh, Sherlock! Thank you for that!

5. [It couldn’t be any other hunt] Supernatural.

Hunters, demons, angels, vampires, zombies, ghosts… This fandom has everything! Despite its foes [because the show has a problem with fridging women and other non-white characters], there is a lesson that this fandom hides within: family does not end up in blood. This is a strong and positive message to shout out loud. Family is beyond DNA, and that’s why I am thankful for Supernatural [and the soundtrack! One of the best soundtracks ever! I must be Dean because I just love the music to the bone!]

As I mentioned before, I had to bend Fandom Friday again and add some honorable mentions here.

[Because there can be no other pirate] Once Upon a Time.

oncer, once upon a time, captain hook, rpg, killian jones, lokisday, loki, loki's army, depepi, depepi.com

Be thankful for OUAT because they have the Hook that will drag you into the fandom. [Oh, yes! I am mischievous!] But, is that all? Are you telling me that the hot pirate is the only thing that this fandom has to offer? Nope, there’s more! All decisions come with a price. In OUAT’s world, it is dark magic that makes you pay the price. In our world, it is our mindless decisions that make us pay the price. While all characters have something to teach us, it is Hook that has something in common with me: persistence. He spends 200 years plus hating the crocodile (that’s Rumpelstiltskin) and hunting him to finish him off. That’s a lot of time. I know, that’s evil. But he does keep or tries to keep his promises. A thing that I like to do. [And yes, like Hook, for good and evil. Suddenly I became spooky.]

[Because we could all be cylons] Battlestar Galactica.

battlestar galactica, galactica, caprica 6, caprica six, gaius baltar, baltar, geek girls guide, depepi, depepi.com, ggg

Are you a Cylon? How do you know? Anyone could be a toaster! This is what we must be thankful for Galactica, a question that we, as humans should be asking ourselves. In the show, humans get spooked because the enemy, Cylons, look exactly like humans. So, anyone could be one of them. Despite Cylons being clones and existing few numbers, humans start getting paranoid on the neighbor: you could be the enemy! At the end, we learn that it doesn’t matter. Who cares? What makes us human is not our genes, how we look or how we dress, but our actions!

[Because getting sexually frustrated has never been so frustrating] Vikings.

fandom friday, fandom, 5FF, depepi, depepi.com, ragnar, lagertha, vikings

If you’re searching for historical accuracy, Vikings is not your show nor your fandom. If you like to kick ass and stay healthy and bit the gym, this is your fandom. Beware, though, high exposure to the episodes brings great amounts of sexual frustration. This show has too many sexy characters! So, why being thankful for being eternally sexually frustrated with the show? Because it shows you that women can kick ass like hell and be real badasses who will have no doubt in smashing the enemy. [Now, now I am spooky!]
