Viking Women: Lessons to learn from Lagertha

Viking women were fierce warriors that stood their ground, recent discoveries affirm. However, there are some lessons to learn from Lagertha, the fictional character from Vikings. Despite the show being based on Viking sagas, there is much fiction in it. This is not however a negative point when thinking about what we can learn from Lagertha.

1. She is strong-willed.

Despite the ups and downs, there is something that characterizes Lagertha: her strong will. In ancient times, only the strongest and fittest would survive the times. Lagertha is a very strong-willed woman who knows where her limits are and what she wants. To have a strong will ensures you to be successful in whatever you decide to do.

2. She knows her value well.

She defends herself when necessary standing her ground. She knows her value well, and she will fight for her honor and what she thinks is right. Like this Viking woman, we should also be aware of our value and stand our ground when required. We don’t need to wait for Prince Charming to defend ourselves. We need to be the ones to stand our ground and defend our value and status.

3. Being strong doesn’t mean not being feminine.

Being a strong woman doesn’t mean to lose all feminine attributes, just the opposite. To be strong also means to be feminine. The stereotype that strong women have to act like men is and old-fashioned one, and it has to be shattered. To be strong doesn’t eliminate the fact of also being a sweet woman. To be strong doesn’t mean to eat up your feelings. To be strong doesn’t mean to stop being a woman.

4. She doesn’t let others dictate what she needs to be.

She rules herself. This means that she rules every aspect of her life, her limits and everything around her. She decides what to do when to do it and how to do it. And this comes in every single aspect of her life, including her sexuality. What she does, she does because she wants it, not because anyone else dictates her to be so. In that sense, she is free from stereotypes.

5. She gets things done.

Lagertha gets things done, without embellishments. This is what is needed at work: to get things done, and sometimes it means to be fierce. Very much like Lagertha, we need to be able to organize ourselves in our daily lives and when working so that we can get things done, whatever these things might be.

Also remember Katheryn Winnick.
